John Trevisa: Champion of the English Language

John Trevisa: Champion of the English Language

Wed, 28 Jun 2017 14:30

John Trevisa,c1342-1402, an almost exact contemporary of Geoffrey Chaucer, did for prose translation what Chaucer did for poetry: he showed that English was not just the language of peasantry. Cornish by birth, he came to Berkeley in about 1379 as personal chaplain to Thomas IV Lord Berkeley, who commissioned him to translate into English a carefully chosen selection of Latin works. In this talk David Smith, Berkeley Castle Archivist, will separate truth from legend and illustrate Trevisa's achievements with quotations from his works.

Mindful Yoga taster session

Mindful Yoga taster session

Sun, 02 Jul 2017 10:00

When: Sunday 2nd July,10am - 11:30am

Price: £10

Residents of Dursley, Uley and the local area are being encouraged to slow down this Sunday (2nd July) with a special mindful yoga taster session at Prema Arts Centre in Uley.

Restorative yoga teacher Catherine Forrester – who specialises in yoga for stress and improved mental health - will lead the ninety minute morning session. She is encouraging anyone who needs some time for themselves to join her in the Upstairs Room of the Grade II listed former chapel for a mindful yoga session set to the backdrop of views to the leafy Cotswold hills.

Catherine teaches a unique blend of gentle hatha yoga and simple mindfulness meditation, encouraging participants to slow down and take time to understand their bodies. She has previously taught classes and led retreats in London, Bristol, Devon and France, but this is her first class in the Stroud district.

"I have been a fan of Prema, ever since I was first brought here my partner, who attended the nursery school in his early years", says Catherine. "It is such a peaceful and beautiful place, a perfect setting for mindful yoga. I am very much looking forward to leading a taster session, and would love to see anyone who is interested. My classes are designed to be equally welcoming and comfortable for complete beginners and those who have done yoga before, so everyone is welcome."

The one-off taster session is the perfect option for those who want to find space, ease and peace. Catherine introduces gentle, flowing movement and short periods of mindful meditation to encourage free breathing and a deeper connection with the sensations of the body. Sunday's taster is designed to be equally accessible and suitable for everyone, with special options for those with body pain or limited movement. Mats and props are provided, no experience is necessary and everyone is welcome.

Highwaymen bask in the reputation of being loveable, gallant rogues but this talk traces the historical development of these villains, who often carried out terrible crimes.
