Mayor's Christmas Message 2021

Mayor's Christmas Message 2021

On behalf of the Town Council, I would like to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.

It has been an honour to serve you in my first term as Town Mayor during 2021.

Despite the uncertainty and the restrictions that the Covid pandemic continues to place upon our lives, we hope that everybody can still find pleasure and enjoyment in this time of year and any plans that people may have are not too disrupted.

2021 has seen the return of some normality with many events and activities that help promote our town taking place.

We saw the return of our regular Farmers Market as well as a new Craft Market operating in our Market Place. We also welcomed some new businesses to our high street. We can all show our support to our local traders and high street by shopping locally.

It was wonderful to see so many people out enjoying Dursley and what our town has to offer at the Summer Festival, the Flower and Produce show, our annual Walking Festival, the Tyndale Arts Week and Dursley Fireworks.

Most recently of course, we were able to enjoy our annual Christmas Lights Switch On Event which is a highlight loved and enjoyed by many from our town and further afield. This year's event was spectacular and helped by some funding secured from the Gloucestershire County Council's Build Back Better Restart fund.

The appearance of our town has very much benefited from the Dursley in Bloom team continuing to co-ordinate planting activities over each season and the Tidy Dursley team who get together each month to tackle areas with a litter pick and clearance work.

Of course, these events and activities, as well as many others across our town, very much rely on the hard work of volunteers who give up their free time to make this all possible. We should be very proud of what they do and the strong community spirit we have here within Dursley.

In 2021, the Council had to hold the town's Annual Assembly online for the first time with 'Zoom', due to Covid restrictions.

We launched the new trial Visitor Information Centre in the Library just as Covid restrictions started to lift. We also opened the new Garden of Rest area at Kingshill Cemetery.

Our work to improve our local play areas continued over the year, with new equipment in Kingshill Play Park and Highfields Play Area and the town's CCTV system was also upgraded and extended to improve coverage within the town centre.

Although we cannot predict how difficult 2022 will be, I do know that Dursley can rise to the challenges. The combined effort of local organisations, traders, dedicated volunteers and the Town Council, has led to many achievements this year.

I would like to personally thank the people and volunteers involved in these projects and every member of the public for their support. I am very proud of this community.

On behalf of the Town Council, I would like to again wish everyone a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.
